External Hemorrhoids Treatment
External hemorrhoids are swollen areas of blood vessels around the
exterior of the anus. They are often at risk
for thrombosis
(developing a clot inside), and can be extremely painful and irritating
due to the sensitivity of the skin surrounding them.
The majority of external hemorrhoids are
just annoying protrusions that make personal care and hygiene difficult.
External hemorrhoids will sometimes become thrombosed after a
period of constipation or diarrhea.
External hemorrhoids treatment options depend on the severity of
the condition. Often, if you are only experiencing mild discomfort, your
doctor may recommend over-the-counter ointments, creams or pads. These
usually consist of a topical anti-inflammatory containing witch hazel or
hydrocortisone. This treatment combined with warm daily baths can help to relieve hemorrhoids symptoms.
In more extreme cases, the hemorrhoids may need to be removed with surgery
or other methods.
The three types of surgery used to remove external hemorrhoids are: a
Hemorrhoidectomy (removal of the hemorrhoid with a scalpel), Laser
coagulation (using an electric probe to clot the hemorrhoid and cause
it to shrink, and Infrared photocoagulation (clotting the
hemorrhoid with infrared light to make it shrink.
A sitz bath (specially designed tub) can also be used to soak the
hemorrhoids without taking a bath. Sitz baths can provide relief from
hemorrhoids symptoms, while also helping to shrink them. Other treatments
for milder cases include the use of ice packs, suppositories, donut
cushions and blotting the hemorrhoids with a moist cloth.
