What Do Hemorrhoids Look Like?

Hemorrhoids occur when a blood vessel becomes infected and gets pushed out of the anus, and are caused mainly by constipation and inactivity. They have often been described as a tiny lump of grapes rising from the anal region.

The number and size and of the hemorrhoids often varies from one person to the next. The most common type of hemorrhoid is typically the size and shape of a pea, though they can reach the size of a walnut or grape.

The numbers also vary from one person to the next. The number can range from one hemorrhoid to several. Generally, they occur in small clusters, and their appearance has often been described as flattened grapes, sometimes fuller.

They can protrude out of the anus (in the case of internal hemorrhoids), or can occur on the skin around the exterior of the anus (external hemorrhoids). Internal  hemorrhoids can also remain out of view, inside the anus.

External hemorrhoids are easily visible, and often become itchy and painful. Internal hemorrhoids can go undiagnosed for a long period of time, because they are located inside the anal canal.

Hemorrhoids are sometimes confused with anal fissures (a small tear in the lining of the anus). Finding blood spots on toilet paper, can lead people to believe they have hemorrhoids, when the problem is really an anal fissure.

Anal fissures are most often caused by constipation. When stools are hard and dry, the anal sphincter is forced to open wider than usual, resulting in a tear in the anal lining.
